A Gigger’s View On Covid-19, Salary Payouts & Working Conditions

We know how boring it is when companies talk about themselves in their blogs, so we decided to do the opposite. We'd rather have someone else doing it for us, in this case, one of our end users.

In this interview, Madeleine Gustavsson, a Vembla Shopper, talks about how it is to do gig work in times of a pandemic and how it is to get her salary paid through Gigapay. She will give you her view and impressions as a participant in the gig economy and the future of work.

Madeleine Gustavsson, one of Vembla's shoppers who has tried Gigapay's payout solution.

How old are you? Where do you come from?

I am 23 years old and I come from Fröderyd in Småland.

When and why did you move to Stockholm?

I moved in January 2020 because I needed a change in my life. I was searching for a new environment and the fact that my boyfriend lived in Stockholm made it easier for me to take that step.

How was it moving to Stockholm?

I am not studying at the moment, so when I moved to Stockholm I really needed to find a job. I got one quickly, but it didn’t work out well.

Then Corona happened and there were not too many job opportunities out there, but in the middle of all this uncertainty, I found a job advertisement from Vembla which caught my attention because they said they were looking for people who could do grocery shopping for those who are in risk groups, like the elderdly – I am healthy, young and I love to help people, so I felt it was the perfect match and I immediately applied.

How does being a gigger compare to other office jobs?

I have been a teacher before and I spent a lot of time in the same classroom, which can easily compare to office jobs, because you are always in the same environment. Even though I didn’t teach my students the same thing each day, it became very monotonous because it was pretty much the same surroundings all the time.

The best part of being a gigger with Vembla is the change of environment, its flexibility and the fact that you know you will get paid, it is a serious job. And in my case, I get my salary sent via an SMS for my review and approval, and once I accept it, the money goes directly to my bank account in less than 5 minutes. The cool thing is that I don't need to have my own company and the salary comes with taxes, social fees and insurances covered.

If I worked at an office, I would have to wait until the end of the month, and if I wanted to change my schedule I would probably have to speak to all my boss and go through a long process to get it approved. Here I choose how and when I work.

How is it being a Vembla rider?

I love grocery shopping so I actually do something I genuinely love, plus, I help people and I choose my working hours. I really like being a Vembla shopper, it is so flexible and modern.

Working with Vembla has actually given me so much freedom! It is so great to be your own boss, I decide how much I work.

People tend to talk about giggers as if we had precarious working conditions and non compliant salaries, but Vembla’s gig salaries cover everything including taxes, insurances and social fees through Gigapay.

How is the experience of getting your Vembla salary through Gigapay?

Very good! I get an SMS with a link, and when I click on it, I get my money in my bank account in less than 5 minutes. I seriously love it! .
